I've honestly never used linkedin myself, but will be creating an account now. From what I've heard though it is more professionally focused than most. Also, Ning.com is an interesting site - run by Marc Andreessen (former owner of OpServ) it allows you to create your own social networks.

I definitely agree with your thought on a halfway professional website/blog, and note my nice Facebook badge.

All very poignant pieces of information. Also interesting for those in the job market is to seek out recruiters. I'm not sure how prevalent they are on Facebook, but there a quite a few on the more professionally oriented LinkedIn social network. I know of a recruiter for Google and another tech recruiter which I am linked to on there. As useful as the social networks are, having a halfway professional website or weblog, especially if you CV is available on there, can be a real plus. Especially if you rank highly for searches for your name. If someone meets you and they are as pedantic as I am, they are going to do their research. :)
